How to Choose the Best Low Cost Web HostingOctober 11, 2008
If you have an existing website or you are having one created, you will need to host it someplace online. Web hosting takes care of the technical requirements of displaying your website online. You are essentially renting web space online and having someone else take care of the technical issues. So, what are some things to look for when shopping around for cheap web hosting? Here are some things to consider:
- What type of operating system do they offer? There are two main flavors: Linux/Unix and Windows. If you have a static html site with no database or dynamic aspects for your site then the type of operating system will most likely not be an issue. Either one will do. But, if your site requires a database then you should make sure your host supports it.
- How much web space or web site storage are you allowed? This is measured in megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB). One megabyte equals 1,000 Kb (kilobytes). Still confused? Lets put it this way. Find out the total file size of your website. Compare that to what the web host is offering. More then likely they will have enough web space for your site. Most sites, especially basic html sites, take less than 10 MB. But if your host offers more then it is a good idea to have more web space in reserve just in case you need it in the future.
- How much web space or web site traffic are you allowed? Once again, this is measured in megabytes or gigabytes. The more the merrier!
- What type of features do you get with your web hosting plan? When you think of low cost or cheap you might think that you are going to get lousy features, but this is simply not the case with most of the cheaper web hosts. Since web hosting is so competitive they need to attract new customers by offering lots of benefits. And you win out! Some offer hundreds of dollars worth of free software, tools and even free domains!
- What is the monthly cost? Some low cost web hosting companies offer incredibly discounted monthly pricing on their hosting plans, but this might be based on purchasing for one or two years in advance. That is how they are able to offer such low prices. If you are uncomfortable signing up for one or more years, then you should make sure they offer a money back guarantee. Which brings us to our next point:
- What type of guarantee do they offer? Steer clear of web hosting providers that don’t offer any money back guarantee. Most of the larger and more reputable companies offer some sort of guarantee. The average is 30 day money back guarantee while there are some that offer 90 days! You can usually tell pretty quickly after signing up if the host is going to work out for you based on your needs.
- How good is their customer service and technical support? Some low cost web hosting providers offer the same excellent support that you would get from some of the higher priced hosting companies. Before you sign up with them you should test them out. Send them some emails or give them a call.
These are just some tips of what to look for when you are shopping around for low cost web hosting. Make sure when you are looking around that you compare each host effectively. Taking into account the list above and your own needs you should be able to find the best host for your website!
